Another school shooting. Another school shooting, this time in New Mexico, where an 12-year-old boy on Tuesday sawed off a shotgun and shot two classmates, ages 12 and 13, before being restrained by a teacher. The classmates are alive, but one is in critical condition.
Right after the Sandy Hook shootings, I wrote about some of the things I thought we need to do in order to reduce gun violence in schools, including gun control, better recognition of and support for those with mental health issues, and more attention to student’s social and emotional growth. I’m not sure if those are the best answers or the only answers. All I know is that once we stop trying to find answers — nay, once we stop asking questions, like “Why?” and “How can we stop this? — we have done all of our children a great disservice.
My thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims and the shooter. May they all get the support they need.
