A very many congratulations to the U.S. Rep. from Colorado, Jared Polis, who welcomed his first daughter (and second child) with partner Marlon Reis.
Polis told the Denver Post that although he was missing the July 4th fireworks for the first time in his life, “my first daughter is far more thrilling.” The couple already has a two-and-a-half-year-old son.
I admire the couple for not sharing the details of how their daughter came to be in their family. Some families don’t mind doing so; others do — but it should be a personal choice. I feel that sometimes the media is more interested in how we create our families than in anything else about them. To my mind, how we raise them is the more important thing (which is why I’ve been skeptical of the frequent “lesbian gets pregnant” storyline on many TV shows). Granted, information on how we create our families can be useful and inspiring for those who wish to create their families in similar fashion. I’m not against it. I just balk at the media’s sometimes obsessive interest in this aspect of our lives, to the exclusion of a fuller picture of LGBTQ families.
Best wishes to Congressman Polis’ growing family!
