Real Trans Parents Speak Out

Allyson RobinsonAmazon’s new online series Transparent features a transgender woman who comes out late in life to her spouse and grown children. Real transgender parents have been in the media lately, too. Here are some of their voices.

Public radio show State of the Re:Union ran an episode dedicated to Trans Families. It shares the perspectives of trans parents, parents of trans kids, and kids with trans parents. It’s long (50 minutes), but worth it for the wonderful range it covers. (Do what I do and play it while doing dishes or folding laundry.)

MSNBC also ran a recent segment about Allyson Robinson, asking “Is this the most radical preacher in America?” Robinson is a West Point grad who served in the army for several years before resigning to pursue a calling to the ministry. She then transitioned and worked in LGBT advocacy for several years, as deputy director for employee programs at HRC and executive director of SLDN-OutServe. Earlier this year, she was ordained as transitions pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.  She and her spouse Danyelle have four children, who are featured prominently in the video as the family eats dinner. Despite MSNBC’s headline, Robinson insists that she is not the radical one, nor should she be the focus of attention: “The real story here is a story about this church, and their courage, and their faithfulness to open the doors in radical welcome.”
