Two new ads from Freedom to Marry—one in Alabama and one national—prominently feature same-sex parents.
The first, airing in Alabama, features Birmingham couple Jessica and Chi Peoples and their daughter, Nailah. It comes on the heels of two rulings in United States District Court that struck down the state’s ban on marriage for same-sex couples. The ruling was stayed for two weeks, but should take effect in the state on February 9.
Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, however, has written to Governor Robert Bentley, saying that nothing “grants the federal government the authority to redefine the institution of marriage” and that he will “stop judicial tyranny and any unlawful opinions issued without constitutional authority.” The ad will run through Tuesday in the Birmingham and Montgomery markets, and online across Alabama February 1-8. Let’s hope someone shows it to Moore.
The second video will run nationally on cable news programs next week. It highlights many of the harms of marriage inequality to same-sex couples and our children.
