February always seems to fly by for me. In case it does for you, too, and you’ve missed some Mombian posts, I thought I’d recap some of my favorites.
- February was the month for the American Library Association Youth Media Awards, including the Stonewall Award for LGBTQ-inclusive children’s/young adult literature. Even more impressive than the single award, in my mind, however, was the release of the latest annual Rainbow Book List of recommended titles. We still need more; but it’s gratifying to see this list grow stronger every year. Read all about it.
- Same-sex married spouses in all states can now take FMLA leave to care for each other if otherwise eligible, even if their home state doesn’t recognize their marriage. And did you know that non-bio/non-adoptive parents have long been able to take FMLA leave to care for their kids, too (including after birth, foster placement, or adoption)?
- A new study purported to show that children of same-sex parents have greater emotional problems than those with different-sex parents. Like the widely criticized study of Mark Regnerus a few years ago, though, this one has big flaws.
- Several recent incidents highlight the inequalities LGBTQ people may face when they die.
- Children of LGB parents around the world have been sharing their stories in the media.
- COLAGE is creating a guide for kids born through assisted reproductive technologies, and they want stories from your family, if relevant.
- NPR’s StoryCorp brought us the tale of one of the first single and gay men to adopt in the U.S. Here’s even more on this pioneer and activist.
