Of Travel and Trailer: Part IV

R-PodMy family and I spent Mothers’ Day Weekend camping in our new trailer. But what did we pick to haul it: the pickup truck of many a lesbian’s dream or the adaptable, entertaining family SUV?

On the one side: The newly redesigned Chevy Colorado, a mid-size pickup truck that was brawny and capable, yet well-mannered enough for everyday driving.

On the other side: The Chevy Traverse, a spacious mid-size SUV with space that could be configured for kids or cargo.

In the end, we went with the Traverse (though in a dark blue exterior, unlike the silver we test drove). We loved the Colorado, but for around-town use, we preferred the roomy and amenity-filled Traverse. It gave us more enclosed space for groceries (or whatever) as well as slightly better safety ratings (five-star overall vs. four). Our son also particularly liked the Traverse’s second row captain’s chairs and the independent infotainment system. While my spouse and I struggle to balance his screen time with other activities, we know that day-long rides in the car without a sibling are a burden. Since we were buying the car mostly for our epic camping adventures, we figured we’d go with the one that would make the long trips a little more pleasant for all of us.

I’ll talk more about our camper (an R-Pod 176T) in a future post. Suffice it for now to say that we’ve had a great time so far learning how to outfit it, set it up, and spend a weekend in it not getting on each others’ nerves.

How did you all spend your Mother’s Day weekends? Hope they were great!
