I’ve often argued that the history of LGBTQ families is longer than many think. One milestone of this history is that Family Week, an annual gathering in Provincetown, turns 20 years old this Saturday.
The event, the largest annual gathering of LGBTQ parents and their families in the world, is produced by the Family Equality Council and COLAGE, who have partnered to offer both social and informative programming for all ages.
What began as a small gathering of parents on the beach now attracts more than 500 LGBTQ-headed families with activities like a Children’s Movie Night and PJ Party, a Multi-Racial Families Ice Cream Social, a Beach Picnic and Campfire, and a “State of the Movement” discussion featuring Family Equality Executive Director Blau and Director of Public Policy Emily Hecht-McGowan.
Special guests include:
- Edie Windsor, lead plaintiff in the U.S. Supreme Court case that repealed part of the Defense of Marriage Act, and her lawyer attorney Roberta Kaplan, author of the upcoming book, Then Comes Marriage: United States V. Windsor and the Defeat of Doma;
- Lesléa Newman, author of the classic children’s book Heather Has Two Mommies (just out in a new and improved 25th anniversary edition);
- Marc Solomon, National Campaign Director at Freedom to Marry, and author of Winning Marriage: The Inside Story of How Same-Sex Couples Took on the Politicians and Pundits and Won.
View the full schedule at Family Equality’s website. Alas, other family obligations prevent me from going this year, but I’m thrilled to see the event celebrate two decades and look forward to hearing the stories of those of you who do attend.
