Linda Perry and Sara Gilbert Release Children’s Album

Musician Linda Perry and actor Sara Gilbert, who welcomed a son last February, have just released Deer Sounds, a children’s album that’s fun, rockin’, smart, and won’t make you want to pluck your ears out like some kids’ music. Watch a video of the lead song below.

Gilbert, of course, isn’t new to motherhood, having two children from a previous relationship. Clearly, she’s brought much of her experience to bear here, as has Perry, a 2015 inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Like any good children’s album, it runs the gamut from tunes that will have your kids (and maybe you) bouncing on your furniture, as well as soothing melodies that just might (if you’re lucky) send the little ones to sleep.

The album isn’t specifically about LGBTQ families or even diversity, but brings an open and inclusive sensibility that includes lines like, “I know I’m different, but I’m not the only one. . . . As I grow up, I’m going to tell the world, that I can be a boy or a girl,” from “As I G Up.” Then there are songs like “Pirate Ghost,” which has no profound truths but seems perfect for Halloween festivities (or a late celebration of last Saturday’s Talk Like a Pirate Day). Learn more at the album’s website.

The album comes in something of a banner year for LGBTQ-inclusive kids’ music. Earlier albums have included Grammy winners Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer’s Dancin’ In The Kitchen: Songs For All Families (my review here), Chana Rothman’s Rainbow Train (my review here), and Alistair Moock’s All Kinds of You and Me (which I didn’t review separately, but which deserves a listen for its broadly inclusive approach from a Grammy-nominated artist).
