It’s Transgender Awareness Month, so I thought I’d share a trailer for the documentary Transgender Parents.
The documentary, by Canadian filmmaker Rémy Huberdeau, “is about love, life and kids after a gender transition.” I love the variety of experiences it shares: trans men and trans women, some who transitioned before becoming parents and some after, raising kids of various ages. The whole film is not available online, alas, but the trailer below will give you some idea of the stories within (and you can contact the filmmaker to book a screening or order a DVD, if you wish). Thanks to COLAGE for the tip!
Transgender Parents is a follow up to Huberdeau’s 2012 short film “Transforming Family,” produced by Rachel Epstein and the LGBTQ Parenting Network in Toronto, Canada. Take 10 minutes to go watch that as well.
The trans community and the entire LGBTQ community suffered a major loss this week as Houston voters rejected an equal rights ordinance, largely because opponents played on misconceptions and fears of men in women’s bathrooms. That’s a long-standing tactic that I wrote about for Keen News Service way back in 2011. We’re facing similar arguments again here in Massachusetts as we try to pass our own bill that would ensure equal public accommodations for all, including transgender people. (If you live in Massachusetts, contact your legislators about it today.)
It’s bad enough that anyone tries to keep a transgender person out of the bathroom that corresponds with their identity. I shudder to think about that happening if it’s a trans parent with child in tow, needing to tend to that child’s needs. We have to do better than that as a society. Watch the stories of love below and help that love be welcome.
