Logo has just released its “25 Trailblazing Companies” list of companies that have best demonstrated a public commitment to LGBT people and issues. Check out the list, as well as my YouTube playlist of some ads featuring same-sex parents in particular.
Google comes in at number one on Logo’s list of “companies that have served as pioneers and advocates for the LGBT community by demonstrating a public commitment to LGBT people & issues through their advertising, communications, and other visible actions.” In my opinion, though, it is number two, Johnson & Johnson, which had the best parent-and-kid ads, with its “How We Family” campaign. That campaign followed its awesome Norman Rockwell-inspired “For What Matters Most” ads. I love any LGBTQ representation in commercials, of course—but with a parenting-focused blog, I have a special fondness for the ones featuring families with kids. I wish I could say “LGBTQ families with kids,” but so far, representation of trans and genderqueer parents is pretty non-existent compared with that of same-sex cisgender parents (and I can’t think of any ads with obviously LGBTQ single parents).
Watch the J&J ads below, along with those from several companies over the past few years—two dozen in all.
