My favorite television lesbian moms return to our screens tonight with the winter premiere of The Fosters. Let’s take a look back at where we left them last season.
Moms Stef and Lena were going through some relationship difficulties most of last fall, exacerbated by Lena’s boss Monte’s crush on Lena, as well as stress from trying to finalize Callie’s adoption and manage all of the other angsty teen things their kids were doing. In the last episode, the adoption was finalized and Stef and Lena made up. Since this is The Fosters, however, and there has to be drama, Stef received some questionable mammogram results right after that. I expect her health will be a major concern this season.
Their youngest son, Jude, and his classmate Connor also shared what was the youngest same-sex kiss on television last season—a moment that was groundbreaking in another way as well. Jude declared his love for Connor in the last episode, but it seems Connor may be moving out of town. Is heartbreak on the horizon? (I hope not.)
In other storylines, son Jesus came back from boarding school but confided in sister Mariana that he might not be able to return. Brandon and Callie slept together right before Callie was adopted, but Callie also kissed AJ, the boy Stef’s ex Mike wanted to adopt.
Despite all the kissing and drama, I feel The Fosters gives us a better view of the life of a pair of lesbian moms than any other show. Not that all our lives are like Lena and Stef’s—but it’s rare for us to watch a two-mom couple raising kids, as opposed to simply starting their family. It’s rare to have role models of two moms having relationship troubles and working them out. It’s rare, and it’s needed, and I thank the producers, directors, writers, and actors for bringing them to our living rooms.
I’ll be watching at 8 p.m. ET tonight on Freeform (formerly ABC Family) to see what the future brings for the Adams Foster clan. Follow along on Twitter (#TheFosters) to join the fun.
