Zach Wahls, whose 2011 speech to the Iowa House about marriage equality went viral twice, has joined with his sister to launch “The Woman Card(s),” a response to Donald Trump’s dismissive comments about Hillary Clinton.
Donald Trump said Tuesday that “The only thing [Hillary Clinton’s] got going is the women’s card.” This spurred Zebby Wahls, who is finishing her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts at the University of Iowa to “almost immediately” start sketching “The Woman Card,” a playing card-themed portrait of Hillary Clinton. She and her brother Zach then expanded the idea to a set of playing cards celebrating American women, and launched it on Kickstarter. As of this writing, they have garnered more than three times their original goal of $5000.
Each card will feature “an original, hand-illustrated portrait of an American woman”: Clinton, Beyoncé, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Clara Barton, Sylvia Rivera, Amelia Earhart, Harriet Tubman, Mary Cassatt, Susan B. Anthony, Wilma Rudolph, Rosa Parks, Ida B. Wells, and Sally Ride.
UPDATE: Zach and Zebby have clarified that although there are only 13 women, they come in each of the four suits, so this is a full 52-card deck.
I really hope that someday, they’ll put out a whole set of 52 different women (or 54, with jokers). Clearly it would be easy to come up with additional names. When I asked Zach about this on Twitter last night, he said, “We’ll see how much work filling this first edition is” but “I’d say there is a decent chance.”
Zach served as a Precinct Leader for Hillary Clinton in the Iowa Caucuses—although I have to imagine even Bernie Sanders’ supporters can appreciate a set of cards celebrating high-profile, accomplished women and turning Donald Trump’s attempted slam back on him.
