A new program from the American Military Partner Association (AMPA) aims to serve U.S. military families with LGBTQ children. The news comes just weeks after the Department of Defense launched an online professional development course for staff at military-affiliated childcare centers and youth programs on how to create safe, inclusive spaces for gender-expansive and LGBTQ children.
MilPride, which was announced at AMPA’s annual Gala on Saturday, “is designed to be a resource and support network helping these modern military families navigate the unique challenges of military service,” no matter where they are stationed. It was founded by Amanda Brewer and Jess Girven, who are each mothers of transgender girls, and by Jess’ mother Mary Girven. Dawn Ennis at Logo has more about them and their stories. They’re another great example of parents taking action for their kids.
AMPA itself is led by Ashley Broadway-Mack, mother of two and spouse of an Army soldier. It serves as a resource and support network for the partners, spouses, families, and allies of LGBT service members and veterans. This new initiative feels like a natural extension of their mission. Across the Department of Defense, there are over 1.7 million military children; over 500,000 of them are children of active duty service members. If even a small percentage of them are LGBTQ, that’s a lot of kids.
