Monday, June 4, 2018, is #LGBTQFamiliesDay, a day to celebrate and support LGBTQ families through social media posting and sharing. The event aims to share the stories of LGBTQ families and their allies, raising awareness of their diversity, their challenges, and their joys.
#LGBTQFamiliesDay is the evolution of Blogging for LGBTQ Families Day, an annual event developed and run by the award-winning LGBTQ-parenting site Mombian and sponsored by Family Equality Council. Since 2006, the day has brought together LGBTQ individuals, their family members, and allies to blog or post on social media in celebration and support of LGBTQ families. This year, the emphasis will be on all types of social media sharing and posting, not just blogging.
To participate, people should post, tweet, or share on any social media channel in celebration and support of LGBTQ families on June 4, 2018, and include the hashtag #LGBTQFamiliesDay. Follow the hashtag throughout the day and share the stories, images, and thoughts from other participants. See below for other ways to get involved.
Hundreds of people have taken part in past years, including parents across the LGBTQ spectrum, LGBTQ individuals without children, children of LGBTQ parents, and non-LGBTQ allies. Anyone who supports LGBTQ families is welcome to participate — there is no need to be LGBTQ or a parent. The event is held at the start of June, between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, in order to honor both, but also to highlight that not all families fit into the traditional structure of one mother and one father. Additionally, June is LGBTQ Pride Month.
“Family Equality Council is delighted to partner with Mombian to create a national day of visibility for LGBTQ families and those who support us.” said The Reverend Stan Sloan, CEO of Family Equality Council. “Acts as simple as sharing a photo of your family, or sharing that you’re a proud ally of LGBTQ families, help reassure our families that even in this challenging political climate, our community is strong and our voices are heard.”
“A day in which we elevate our voices together, along with our allies, is a powerful way to build community,” said Dana Rudolph, founder and publisher of Mombian. “I hope the day also helps others to better understand and support the diversity and resilience of LGBTQ families.”
