Maryland State Senator and candidate for governor Rich Madaleno, kisses his husband in a groundbreaking campaign ad that ran on Fox & Friends yesterday. The ad also shows Madaleno and his husband with their two children.
The Victory Fund is calling this “the first political ad in American history to feature a kiss between a candidate and a same-sex spouse.” In it, Madaleno says he’s running “to deliver progressive results and to stand up to Donald Trump.” He says he’s already done so by protecting Planned Parenthood and helping to ban assault weapons in the state, and that he also believes in public schools, not vouchers.
“What’s the number one way I piss off Donald Trump and the Republicans?” he asks at the end, then kisses his husband Mark. “Take that, Trump!” he concludes.
I’m not sure how many votes he’ll pick up among Fox & Friends viewers—the show is notoriously conservative—but merely running it there may show voters elsewhere that he doesn’t lack in courage or outspokenness.
