U.S. Navy officer Penny Glover is the prospective executive officer of the Navy Recruiting District New York and a graduate of Cedar Crest College, the Naval War College, and Capella University. She is a native of Uniontown, Pennsylvania and graduate of Northeast Senior High School in Pasadena, Maryland. During her promotion ceremony from lieutenant commander to commander on October 1, at Navy Recruiting District New York headquarters, her wife and daughter changed out her shoulder boards for ones with the insignia of her new rank.
A decade ago, I wrote an article about a deeply closeted military family living under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” One of the things that saddened them was that the service member’s wife and children would not be able to participate in an upcoming promotion ceremony, which for married officers involves their spouse and children. Yesterday, the Navy Office of Community Outreach contacted me to send me the photos of Glover and her family. Times have changed for the better, my friends.
Of course, transgender service members are still fighting to serve as their authentic selves. We still have much work to do. May the progress we’ve made inspire us in the struggles ahead.
