Lena and Stef Return to Television

They graced our screen for five years as we watched them raise five children from tweens into adults on The Fosters. Now, Stef (Teri Polo) and Lena (Sherri Saum) are back tonight with a guest appearance in spin-off show Good Trouble. Here’s a sneak peek.

GOOD TROUBLE - "Parental Guidance Suggested"
GOOD TROUBLE – “Parental Guidance Suggested” – Callie and Mariana’s moms visit their new digs, but even with all the Coterie residents on their best behavior things get out of hand. Meanwhile, Dennis reveals a shocking truth about his past. This episode of “Good Trouble” airs Tuesday, Feb. 5 (8:00 – 9:01 P.M. EST) on Freeform. Suffice it to say that the moms’ first visit to their now post-college daughters’ group-living apartment is as awkward and funny and loving (and did I say awkward?) as we might want. We also learn a little more about what’s been going on in their lives after the kids have all grown. I won’t say more, other than to note that Alice’s is right about the moms’ hair being “amazing.”

I miss having them on every week, showing us one way that two moms can raise kids, navigate the obstacles life puts up, and maintain their own relationship. Yes, it’s also great having a new series that focuses on their grown children (and so far seems to be full of other queer people among the new characters). That’s groundbreaking in its own way. Part of me wants another spin-off, though, focusing on the moms and the adventures that two lesbian empty nesters can find. My own son will be finishing high school in just a few years, so this is obviously a wish-fulfillment fantasy for me. I’ll own that. At least we can look forward to guest appearances from them on Good Trouble.

You shouldn’t wait for episodes with Stef and Lena before you watch Good Trouble, though. Maia Mitchell and Cierra Ramírez bring the sibling chemistry they developed after five years of The Fosters to a show that’s edgier and sexier, but with the same blend of both purely entertaining drama and social justice.

In the clip below, Skeptical Stef and Peacemaker Lena are on full display. Enjoy!
