A trailer for the upcoming Addams Family movie starts with images of what an “average American family” can look like—including ones with two moms and two dads. “Every family is different,” the voiceover says. “But some families are more different than others,” it concludes, as the images change to show the Addams.
It’s a delightful way to remind us that difference is relative and that the “kookiness” of a family (to quote the show’s classic theme song) has little to do with the gender of its parent(s). “Think your family is weird?” the trailer concludes. “Think again.”
The animated movie, The Addams Family Halloween, stars Charlize Theron as Morticia and Oscar Isaac as her husband Gomez, with Chloë Grace Moretz as Wednesday, Finn Wolfhard as Pugsley, Bette Midler as Grandma, and Nick Kroll as Uncle Fester. Allison Janney plays the family’s arch-nemesis. It will be in theaters everywhere on October 11—which incidentally, is National Coming Out Day.
