Video Project Captures LGBTQ Families’ School Experiences

An ongoing project in Canada has been conducting video interviews of families with LGBTQ parents and/or LGBTQ children about their children’s experiences in school. Have a look at some of the many clips from nearly 40 families.

LGBTQ Families Speak Out About School is a project of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto. Led by Professor Tara Goldstein, an ethnographer and playwright in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning at OISE, along with four graduate students and one undergraduate student, the project has captured the stories of LGBTQ families across Ontario with the goal of sharing their findings with teachers, community educators, and other LGBTQ families.

Goldstein is also the author of Teaching Gender and Sexuality at School: Letters to Teachers, which uses the format of first-person letters to address a range of issues facing LGBTQ students and families in elementary and secondary schools. It also includes the plays Snakes and Ladders and Out at School, drawn from material in the video interviews, and a glossary of terms and definitions by team member benjamin lee hicks.

Below are a few sample videos from the project—but I encourage you to visit their website and explore the many more that are there. Each family’s interview is broken into small, topical clips of just a few minutes each. You can view videos by topic, such as family structure, school culture, or intersectionality, or by family—just use the menu at the top of the page. They also have a podcast, for those who prefer to listen without watching (drive safely!), and several academic papers for those seeking specific takeaways to share in schools or elsewhere. Otherwise, simply enjoy watching other LGBTQ families share their stories about school. You might see some like your own—or be introduced to new facets of the diverse community of LGBTQ families.
