Melissa Etheridge formed much of the soundtrack for my coming-out years, back before either of us had children. Now, she’s teaming with her grown daughter Bailey Cypheridge to entertain us while we’re all in quarantine. Have a listen—even if, like me, you’re astounded at how fast the years have flown.
My favorite of their duets is a cover of the Crosby, Stills and Nash song “Teach Your Children.” (David Crosby is Bailey’s biological father; her other mother is filmmaker Julie Cypher, although Cypher and Etheridge are no longer together.) The song speaks of passing knowledge between generations—perfectly suited for a mother-daughter rendition. I’m also thoroughly amused by Etheridge’s story about her technological ineptitude and reliance on Bailey’s help. Rock stars—they’re just like us!
The two also recently performed a cover of “Fix You” by Coldplay—and showed that Bailey has her mother’s skills at both piano and guitar as well as singing. Etheridge, clearly a proud parent, also couldn’t help noting that they had first performed the song in a talent show at Bailey’s high school, where they “rocked it”:
