Watch: The Transgender Teen Champion Who Inspired a Marvel Comic

Could you use an uplifting video today? I sure could. Here’s Rebekah Bruesehoff, a 13-year-old transgender advocate and writer who inspired a Marvel comic.

Rebekah is a student, activist, and transgender girl who first began her work as an LGBTQ advocate in 2017 when she spoke with her mom at a rally in New Jersey, shortly after the Trump administration rescinded guidelines protecting transgender students. She has continued to speak out and write in support of transgender and other LGBTQ youth, her website tells us—and she’s been so inspiring that story was used last year in an episode of Marvel’s Hero Project on Disney+. Each week, the documentary show introduces us to a real-life young hero making a difference—and who then gets to be the star of their very own Marvel comic. (You can learn more about the episode and read the free comic about “The Mighty Rebekah” here.)

Most recently, she became a “champion” for the GenderCool Project, a movement of teens who are “leading the conversation about gender.” In this short video, she talks about the power of stories, her love of writing, and what being “gender cool” means to her. “Every adventure is a chance to tell another story,” she says. Thanks to her for telling her stories and encouraging others to share theirs.
