Save the Date: Monday, June 1, 2020 Is #LGBTQFamiliesDay and You’re Invited

I’m thrilled to announce that Monday, June 1, 2020, is the 15th annual #LGBTQFamiliesDay, a time for storytelling and sharing to celebrate and support LGBTQ families. The event aims to elevate the experiences of LGBTQ families and their allies, raising awareness of their diversity, their challenges, and their joys.

#LGBTQFamiliesDay 2020

Here’s the rest of the press release—I hope you’ll tell people about the event and mark your calendars for June 1!

#LGBTQFamiliesDay is developed and run by the award-winning LGBTQ-parenting site Mombian and sponsored by Family Equality. Anyone who supports LGBTQ families is welcome to participate — there is no need to be LGBTQ or a parent. To take part:

  • Post, tweet, or share on any social media channel in celebration and support of LGBTQ families on June 1, 2020, and include the hashtag #LGBTQFamiliesDay.
  • Follow the hashtag #LGBTQFamiliesDay throughout the day and share the stories, images, and thoughts from other participants.
  • Optionally, participants may visit mombian.com/lgbtqfamiliesday and submit a link to one of their posts for inclusion in the master list of #LGBTQFamiliesDay stories

“#LGBTQFamiliesDay has always been about building community,” said Dana Rudolph, founder and publisher of Mombian. “This year, as the world continues in physical isolation, it is even more important for LGBTQ families and allies to celebrate our connections with each other and showcase the diversity and resilience of LGBTQ families. #LGBTQFamiliesDay gives us a time at the start of Pride Month to do just that.”

“Family Equality is delighted to partner with Mombian to celebrate the 15th annual day of visibility for LGBTQ families and our allies,” said The Reverend Stan Sloan, CEO of Family Equality. “As we all struggle to adjust in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we hope you’ll take a moment on June 1 to share a photo of your family on social media, or to post a message of support and allyship for LGBTQ families nationwide.”

Since 2006 (originally as Blogging for LGBTQ Families Day, but now incorporating all social media), #LGBTQFamiliesDay has engaged hundreds of people, including parents across the LGBTQ spectrum, LGBTQ individuals without children, children of LGBTQ parents, and non-LGBTQ allies. The event is held at the start of June, between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, in order to honor both, but also to highlight that not all families fit into the traditional structure of one mother and one father. Additionally, June is LGBTQ Pride Month.
