Tired of election news? Here are some recent profiles of LGBTQ families, musings on the path forward for LGBTQ parental rights in the U.S., and news about LGBTQ families from around the world!
Family Profiles
- Journalist (and transgender parent) Dawn Ennis interviewed actor, comedian, and lesbian mom Tig Notaro for Forbes, asking the excellent question, “How Does She Juggle ‘Star Trek,’ A Podcast And 4-Year-Old Twins?”
- Ennis also interviewed videogame icon and transgender parent Becky Heineman (whom you may have seen recently on Netflix’s High Score) for Outsports.
- Angela Chen of The Atlantic spoke with David Jay, founder of the Asexual Visibility and Education Network, about his legal three-parent family.
- Heather Chauvin of the Mom Is In Control podcast spoke with transgender advocate and parent Trystan Reese on “Navigating Pregnancy As a Man.”
- Daniel Smith of Wales Online interviewed lawyer and transgender dad Bennett Kaspar-Williams about his pregnancy.
Politics and Law
- “Our Parents Are Gay. Are Our Families Good Enough for the Supreme Court?” ask Isaac Green and Malina Simard Halm at Slate, discussing the case on discrimination in child services heard by the court this week (about which more here).
- Allison Hope talks about the same in “Why LGBTQ families like mine are scared and scrambling” at CNN.
- Hannah Murphy at Rolling Stone offers a broad look at “What It’s Like to Be Queer in Trump’s America“—and although some of this is ameliorated with the win by Joe Biden, Murphy also explores the lingering effects the Trump presidency will have. She also speaks with Cathy Renna, interim communications director for the National LGBTQ Task Force and a parent, who shares how she’s finding hope in the younger queer generation.
Around the World
- Chintan Girish Modi writes in India’s Deccan Herald about the need to de-link marriage and parental rights as we push for LGBTQ equality around the world.
- Speaking of that, Hungary’s government has drafted an amendment to the country’s constitution that would ban same-sex couples and single people from adopting children.
- At the same time, the LGBTQ-inclusive Hungarian picture book, A Fairy Tale for Everyone, by Dorottya Redai and Boldizsar Nagy, “is becoming a symbol of resistance against oppression and discrimination” even as it comes under fire from some politicians.
- Over in Taiwan, some parents are protesting their government’s distribution of King & King, a picture book about two princes who fall in love, to six- and seven-year-old students last month as part of an optional, extracurricular reading program. Taiwan last year became the first place in Asia to allow same-sex couples to marry.
- On the positive side, the Latvian Constitutional Court said it was unconstitutional not to allow a nonbiological mother to take parental leave after her partner gives birth.
Penguins
- A bonded male pair of African penguins have stolen an egg from a bonded female couple at a zoo in the Netherlands, HuffPo reports. High drama—although the fact is, a zoo spokesperson said, they are most likely unfertilized and will not hatch.
