I’m delighted to be part of a virtual panel on March 24th discussing the legal climate for queer and trans mothers, hosted by Our Family Coalition in partnership with the National Center for Lesbian Rights. I hope you’ll join us!
When: Thursday, March 24, 2022,
9 p.m. ET – 11 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT – 8:00 p.m. PT
Where: Zoom; link will be sent after you register.
During the panel, in honor of Women’s History Month, Cathy Sakimura, Esq., Deputy Director & Family Law Director at the National Center for Lesbian Rights, will lead a discussion with Naomi Goldberg, Deputy Director and LGBTQ Program Director at the Movement Advancement Project, and myself. Also joining us will be Lisa Runion, a litigant in a case securing second-parent legal rights.
We’re all moms, so we’ll bring both personal experience and professional expertise to the conversation, discussing legal milestones currently in place, protections and recognitions yet to be secured, and current challenges in the form of legislation and litigation. We’ll explore questions like:
- What gains have we made since the landmark SCOTUS ruling in 2015?
- Where are the greatest threats emerging now—geographically and legally?
- How are queer and trans mothers’ legal protections becoming divided along intersectional identity lines?
- Where should interested community members focus their attention and advocacy in 2022?
Now, gender is a many splendored thing. Not all who use the title “mother” identify as women; not all women use the title “mother.” If either or both apply to you, or if neither does and you simply want to join us, you are more than welcome. I suspect that much of what we discuss will apply to queer parents of any gender (and OFC informs me they’ll be holding future discussions specifically for people of other gender identities, too).
I hope you will join us!
