LGBTQ Parenting Roundup

Family Stories

  • “Having Kids With My Wife Showed Me That Black Queer Moms Need More Support,” writes Mylin Stokes Kennedy at Refinery 29.
  • Australian husbands Christian Newman and Mark Edwards grew their family after posting about their first child and receiving an Instagram message from a woman they didn’t know, who offered to be their next surrogate, reports the Daily Mail.

Politics and Law

  • Republican Senators Roger Marshall (KS), Mike Lee (UT), Mike Braun (IN), Steve Daines (MT), and Kevin Cramer (ND) have sent a letter (PDF) to the TV Parental Guidelines Monitoring Board, asking them to update their guidelines in response to parental concerns about “sexual orientation and gender identity content on children’s TV shows.” It’s a vile letter that feeds into the myth that talking about LGBTQ people means talking about sex; it speaks of “modeling behavior” and the concern that both young viewers and child actors will imitate sexualized content they see on TV. This plays into the right-wing dog whistle that LGBTQ people “groom” young people into deviant behaviors (On the other hand, adding ratings for sexual orientation and gender identity content would help those of us who are trying to find such content for our kids…. I joke; this is awful and nothing I would ever support.)
  • “The number of LGBTQ foster kids is on the rise, but does Colorado have enough accepting homes?” asks the Colorado Sun, in an article that highlights agencies and programs seeking same-sex couples and LGBTQ-affirming foster homes.
  • An amendment to grant same-sex couples the right to jointly adopt children has passed a preliminary review in a Taiwan legislative committee. Same-sex couples have been able to marry in Taiwan since 2019, but parental rights have lagged, reports the Taipei Times.
  • Lexology reports on the fight for LGBTQ parental rights in Hong Kong.

Health and Medicine

  • A doctor in India plans to help a trans woman with a uterine transplant so that she might be able to carry a child.

Entertainment and Sports

Kids’ Activities

  • The Boston Children’s Museum has a new exhibit entitled “Protect Trans Dreams: A Portrait Project,” celebrating transgender kids and their visions for the future. The exhibition includes new portraits by artist Noah Grigni, as well as images they did for the children’s book It Feels Good To Be Yourself, by Theresa Thorn.
