LGBTQ Families Day 2023

First, thanks to Family EqualityPFLAG NationalGLAADGLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), and COLAGE for their sponsorship of the event and for all they do year ’round for LGBTQ families. Thanks also to the many other organizations and individuals who have helped spread the word.

The event wouldn’t succeed, however, without all the LGBTQ parents and prospective parents, parents of LGBTQ kids, children of LGBTQ parents, other LGBTQ individuals, and allies who take part. That means you—so thank you in advance!

Other Happenings Today

PFLAG’s “Something to Talk About” Live Discussion

I’m thrilled to be a guest on PFLAG’s Something to Talk About Live discussion today at 4:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. PT. PFLAG National Senior Digital Strategist Jackson Alder and I will be discussing “The importance of social media when it comes to LGBTQ kids feeling seen,“ by Amber Leventry, which appeared in the Washington Post.

New Movement Advancement Project Report on Need to Update Parentage Laws

Relationships at Risk: Why We Need to Update State Parentage Laws to Protect Children and Families,” is an important new report from the Movement Advancement Project, in partnership with COLAGE, Family Equality, GLBTQ Legal Advocates and Defenders (GLAD), and the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), that looks at the current landscape of state laws in the U.S. and why many leave children vulnerable by not creating clear, accessible ways to establish and secure legal ties between children and their parents, particularly LGBTQ parents. I had the honor of offering some thoughts on an early draft of this report, and I’m thrilled to see it coming out for LGBTQ Families Day. It’s a timely reminder of the work ahead.

New Tool from GLAD and Mombian: “LGBTQ Paths to Parentage”

GLAD and I are proud to announce “LGBTQ Paths to Parentage (PDF),” a reference tool for LGBTQ parents and others about why a legal, secure parent-child relationship is essential for a child’s health, well-being, and development, and how LGBTQ parents can ensure that their child-parent relationships will be respected and recognized in every state. It reflects the latest options available to LGBTQ parents and the current status of both state and federal laws. If you’ve ever wondered why simply being on your child’s birth certificate may not be enough to protect you in all states, or what options you have to secure your parentage, this is for you.
