8 New LGBTQ-Inclusive Kids’ Books for Mother’s Day

It’s nearly Mother’s Day (or Mothers’ Day, if that’s how you roll), so here are some great new LGBTQ-inclusive kids’ books to enjoy this weekend or anytime.

I should note that one of the parents in Who You Will Be could be read as either a mom or a nonbinary parent. Similarly, the mom in My Mama Is a Work of Art isn’t specifically identified as queer, but as I explain in my review, could be read that way (and there’s other queer representation in the book as well). Since both characters could be read as queer moms, however, I’m including them here. Enjoy them however they speak to you!

Also, I’m including a biography of Admiral Rachel Levine, though she has declined to say publicly what parental title she uses, per this excellent 2021 interview of her by Dawn Ennis. I know trans women who use “mom” and others (usually those who transitioned when their kids were older) who continue to use “dad” or who choose different parental titles entirely. Regardless, Levine’s experience as a trans woman and a parent may still be of inspiration to trans moms and their kids (among other people), so I include her biography here for that purpose, not to dictate her identity. (Also, we really need more kids’ books featuring transgender parents of all genders. While there have been a few, they’re still very rare.)

The books below are ones that have come out since my last Mother’s Day roundup, which you can visit to see past titles—and as always, you can filter my Database of LGBTQ Family Books for up-to-date listings. Click images for full reviews!

Regardless of whether your family is celebrating moms or other important people in your family this coming weekend, I hope you’ll join in the fun on June 3 for LGBTQ Families Day, a time to celebrate all families with LGBTQ people in them.
