Honored to Be an “Unsung Hero” of LGBTQ+ Family Building

I’m honored to be one of the “Unsung heroes: 6 queer moms who revolutionized LGBTQ+ family building,” profiled in a piece by Brian Rosenberg at LGBTQ Nation today.

Unsung heroes: 6 queer moms who revolutionized LGBTQ+ family building

Brian notes that in the past, “For many LGBTQ+ people, the path to parenthood felt isolating, opaque, and, at times, out of reach,” but:

In response, each of our unsung heroes did what so many advocates before them have done: They noticed what was missing and built it themselves. They launched magazines when there were none; created podcasts when queer family stories weren’t being told; reimagined birth and parenting education; and documented our community’s achievements.

The other folks profiled are all ones you should know, too: Angeline Acain of Gay Parent magazine, Jaimie Kelton of The Queer Family Podcast, Marea Goodman of Pregnant Together, Mia Cooley of xHood, and Sam Leeson of babyREADY. I hope you’ll go have a read of what Brian has to say about them (and me), and check out their individual offerings. We’ve all been at our work for a while (in my case, 20+ years), each bringing different perspectives, experiences, and approaches as we try to inform, connect, and uplift LGBTQ parents. I’m always heartened to know these other dedicated and inspiring folks are out there striving towards a similar goal in various ways, with opportunities for community and collaboration.

Thanks to Brian, founder of GWK Academy, for including me in his piece. If you’d like to know more about him and his work, here’s my own interview of him from a couple of years back—and here are my interviews of Marea and Jaimie.
