Ellen on Kids

A bit of celebrinews to start the week: In an interview for Newsweek about her wedding, Ellen Degeneres was asked whether she and spouse Portia De Rossi were thinking about children: Are you going to have kids? I don’t know. They’re cute, but they’re a lot of trouble. There’s always something to worry about at […]

Forget Sarah: It’s Alice!

We now interrupt back-to-school time and Sarah-Palin watching with a very important announcement: As I (and many of you) predicted, it is Leisha Hailey (and her character Alice Pieszecki) who will star in a spinoff of The L Word, After Ellen reports. The final season of The L Word will air in January and set

Butch: It’s What’s for Dinner

“There’s no definition for the type of cooking that butches do,” asserts Nel Ward. There are, however, butches who cook, and Ward, her partner Sue Hardesty, and their friend, novelist Lee Lynch, have gathered a truckful of recipes from them into The Butch Cook Book. Alongside the recipes, however, are literary quotes, insights, and historical anecdotes on what it means to be butch, making this not just a cookbook but also a celebration of lesbian culture past and present.

In the Life Showcases Classroom Diversity Film

I wrote last fall of the DVD release of It’s Elementary, a documentary by Academy Award-winning director Debra Chasnoff that shows how various teachers have addressed LGBT awareness in the classroom. The DVD also includes a companion piece, It’s STILL Elementary, which looks at why the film was made, people’s response, and the situation today.

Back-to-School BuddyG Giveaway

To celebrate the beginning of the school year, I’m having another contest to win a copy of BuddyG: My Two Moms and Me, the first fully animated show featuring a child of LGBT parents! Margaux Towne-Colley and Donna Colley, the women behind BuddyG, have offered a free copy to a Mombian reader, and they’re throwing

Documenting Kids of Queer Parents

Filmmaker Meema Spadola made Our House: A Very Real Documentary About Kids of Lesbian and Gay Parents, because it was the type of movie that didn’t exist when she was a child. “If I had been able to turn on the television and see a documentary or any kind of program about kids with other gay and lesbian parents,” she said, “that would have radically changed my life.”

Help Needed: LGBT Children’s Books in Spanish

A reader just wrote to ask me if I knew of any LGBT-inclusive children’s books in Spanish, especially for the very youngest tots. She knew of Antonio’s Card/La Tarjeta de Antonio, by Rigoberto Gonzalez and Cecilia Alvarez, but felt that was a little beyond the age of her own child. I’ll add the bilingual English/Spanish

Opponents of Gay Guinea Pig Book Start to Organize

A few weeks ago I reported on the first challenge to Uncle Bobby’s Wedding, a children’s book featuring two gay guinea pigs who marry. Today, library director James LaRue, who wrote a sensitive, balanced response to the initial challenge, reports that a second patron has challenged the book and asked for its removal from the

When Heather Grows Up

(Originally published in Bay Windows, June 26, 2008, with minor variation.) Two new works and one re-release share the real and fictionalized stories of teens with LGBT parents, shining a light on this often-overlooked part of our community. Tru Loved, now making the rounds at LGBT film festivals, features an all-star cast including Jasmine Guy,
