The Morning After the Fosters’ Wedding

I’m so excited. The Fosters, ABC Family’s drama about two moms and their five kids, returns in its winter premiere Monday at 9 p.m. ET. I’m a big fan of the show, which I think gives us a wonderful, textured look at a lesbian family and means a lot for our community. Here’s a glimpse of what’s to come, starting with what happens the day after Stef and Lena’s wedding.

Sofia Coppola to Bring Memoir About Gay Dad to Big Screen

Some good news to start the new year: Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father, Alyssia Abbott’s memoir of growing up in 1970s and 80s San Francisco with her single gay dad, is becoming a feature film directed by Sofia Coppola.

Actor Maria Bello Comes Out to Her Son — and the World

Bello writes in the New York Times about her relationship with another woman, coming out to her son, and why she refuses to put a label on her love.

A Little Fosters Family for the Holiday

My only regret heading into the joyous week of Thanksgiving and Hanukkah is that The Fosters doesn’t get a Thanksgiving special this year. The show is on hiatus until mid-January. To tide you over until then, however, here’s an extended trailer for next season. I love the bit with Stef and Lena snuggling at about

“Growing Up Gayby” Premiering Next Week in Australia

Next Wednesday (Nov. 20), the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) will premiere the documentary “Growing Up Gayby,” which follows a filmmaker with lesbian moms as she herself interviews “a slew of ‘gaybies’” and right-wing pundits “in an attempt to make sense of what ‘family’ is in the 21st century.”

A Tasty Slice of Lesbian Mom History

Lesbian moms have been a vital part of the LGBT rights movement since there was an LGBT rights movement. The documentary Mom’s Apple Pie: The Heart of the Lesbian Mothers’ Custody Movement gives us a look at several early custody cases involving lesbian moms—and shows how the activism they spawned has had a direct impact on LGBT people and organizations today.

New Feature Film About Lesbian Mom in 1950s

Question: What 1952 — 1952! — book was about a married mother who leaves her husband for another woman, only to battle him in court for custody of their daughter? Read on for the answer, as well as more about the story coming to the big screen.
