Two Moms, a Child’s Ill Heart, and Changing Hearts

If you read one story about lesbian moms today, make it this one from RH Reality Check, by Jaime Jenett. Jenett writes from her perspective as the nonbiological mother of a critically ill child, and says, “policies designed to prevent same sex families from having legal protections took on a whole new meaning for me” […]

The New Yorker Lesbian Mom Cartoon

I’ve been writing Mothers’ (‘s) Day for years (at least as far back as 2007); now the New Yorker makes the punctuation funny in one of its famed cartoons. Let’s not forget, however, that while Heather may have two mommies, Jane may have only one—but she may still be a lesbian. Here’s wishing you a happy day

“She Got Me Pregnant”: Episode 124

Helen and I discuss three—count ’em, three—new children’s books by and/or inclusive of lesbian and gay parents, including Donovan’s Big Day, by Lesléa Newman, author of the classic Heather Has Two Mommies. (I’ll have more on Donovan soon, so stay tuned. In brief: Definitely one worth reading and recommending to your local library.) We also

Orange Jews Is Good for You

Here’s a seasonal tale that even those not of Jewish heritage will appreciate: Rabbi Andrew Sacks, director of the Conservative movement’s Rabbinical Assembly in Israel, has shared an e-mail from Jewish scholar Susannah Heschel, in which she explained the relatively recent tradition of placing an orange on the Seder plate. She began the tradition “as a

Most Powerful Lesbian Moms in America 2011

Yes, it’s that time of year again! Out magazine just published its fifth annual list of “The Power 50: The Most Powerful Gay Men and Women in America,” which means it’s time for my fifth annual list of The Most Powerful Lesbian Moms in America. The definition of “power” is subjective, of course. For the purposes

New Social App Helps Lesbians Find Sperm Donors

Lesbians seeking to get pregnant now have a new tool at their disposal: Donr, a new app for mobile devices that lets them check out the credentials of potential sperm donors. Like the social app for gay men, Grindr, that helps men find potential mates nearby, Donr lets lesbians access profiles of men in close proximity to see if they might be suitable candidates for providing genetic material.

“She Got Me Pregnant”: Episode 123

This week, Helen and I discuss two recent books about lesbian moms—bestselling author Jodi Picoult’s new novel Sing You Home and Times Two, a memoir by a couple who were pregnant simultaneously. We also share one of our favorite new creative kids’ toys. (Note: I’ll have more on both books coming up here at Mombian.

TD Bank Responds About New Survey on Parents and Financial Literacy

If there’s one thing I like as a consumer and erstwhile marketing professional, it’s a responsive company. I posted yesterday about a survey sponsored by TD Bank that explored how parents teach their kids financial literacy, but clearly focused only on opposite-sex parents. This morning, I received the following e-mail from Jimmy Hernandez, a media relations officer at TD Bank. I repost it here with his permission:

New Survey on Parents and Financial Literacy: Where Are the Same-Sex Parents?

April is Financial Literacy Month, and I’ve been receiving a number of related press releases, some silly and some less so. While I didn’t think many of you would really be interested in a talking piggy bank, I did think you might have some thoughts on a new survey from TD Bank. It’s titled, “TD Bank Financial Literacy Poll Reveals the Role of Parents in a Fiscally Fit Family”—although it really should be titled, “TD Bank Financial Literacy Poll Reveals the Role of Parents in a Fiscally Fit Heterosexual Family.”

Should Preschools Direct Children’s Learning?

I’m hard pressed to find a preschool these days that doesn’t call itself a “childhood learning center” or the like. But in a recent article in Slate, “Why Preschool Shouldn’t Be Like School,” Alison Gopnik discusses two studies that have found “While learning from a teacher may help children get to a specific answer more
