TV Alert: Lesbian Moms on Discovery Health

Discovery Health will feature lesbian moms Karen and Janice tomorrow (Tuesday) on Five Under 5 at 8:00 p.m. ET. The moms have a four-year-old daughter and twin sons, and are preparing to welcome another set of twins. I feel exhausted just thinking about it—but they seem to be quite the happy family. If you want […]

Beautiful Baby Beatie

People magazine has the first photos of transgender man Thomas Beatie and his daughter, Susan Juliette. Towleroad has some beautiful stills from Good Morning America’s coverage yesterday. From what Beatie says, the family is settling in to being a family. Can’t ask for more than that.

Olympic Mom: Hero or Cheater?

I’m feeling inadequate. Dara Torres is my age, 41, the mother of a two-year old, and just qualified for the U.S. Olympic swim team with a win in the 100-meter freestyle and a U.S.-record time in the 50-meter freestyle. This will be her fifth Olympics. In 2007, she won the 50-meter freestyle at the U.S.

Thomas Beatie Gives Birth

Thomas Beatie and his wife Nancy welcomed a baby girl into the world last Sunday. Beatie, a transgender man, made headlines in March when he announced he was pregnant. Best wishes to the new family. May they have the privacy and peace their young one needs while they also continue to help shift attitudes. Kudos

TV Alert: “Quads with Two Moms” Tonight

Thanks to Terrance at Republic of T for his serendipitous sighting of an ad for Quads with Two Moms, which will air tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern on Discovery Health as part of their Baby Week coverage. I wrote back in March about another lesbian couple who had quads. In that story, one woman carried

Lonely Lesbian to Tour May 2008

Andrea Askowitz is the author of My Miserable Lonely Lesbian Pregnancy, a funny, bawdy, unflinchingly honest memoir of her journey to motherhood as a single lesbian. (Here’s my review.) Askowitz has now kindly offered to share some of her misery with you, Mombian readers. Please enjoy the excerpts below from her book. She has also

Book Review: Choosing You

Choosing You: Deciding to Have a Baby on My Own by Alexandra Soiseth (Seal Press: May 2008), chronicles the author’s journey to becoming a single mom by choice. She is not a lesbian, but I wanted to review her book here because of the parallels between straight single moms by choice and lesbian moms, partnered

Pregnant and Miserable

Andrea Askowitz is pregnant—and she’s grumpy. In My Miserable Lonely Lesbian Pregnancy (Cleis: May 1, 2008) she shares her cantankerous journey to parenthood as a single mom, complete with weight gain, leg cramps, hormone-induced depression, and well-intentioned friends who never quite do the right thing.

It’s Raining (Pregnant) Men

Thomas Beatie caused a minor sensation several weeks ago when he came out as a pregnant transgender man. I offered my own opinion about him, which boils down to “a loving family is all that matters.” Annalee Newitz at AlterNet, however, reminded us that Beatie is not the first man to get pregnant. She knows

So You Want to Get Pregnant . . .

Louise Sloan’s new book, Knock Yourself Up: No Man? No Problem: A Tell-All Guide to Becoming a Single Mom (Avery: 2007), is something of a novelty. It is perhaps the only parenting book by an out lesbian mom that is directed at a mixed audience, lesbian and not. While some books about single motherhood are
