A semi-autobiographical graphic novel centering on eight-grader Jay, who is struggling with two common middle-school ailments: shifting friendships and acne. For the latter, he is trying a new medication with harsh side effects. For the former, he is trying to connect with a new friend group, where he also discovers more about himself and his likely asexual/aromantic identity. A good dose of humor keeps the serious themes from cloying, making this a welcome story aboutĀ both friendships and self-discovery.
Jay and his family are White, although other characters have different racial/ethnic identities. Jay’s friend Mark is gay.
