Baking with Dad

A girl and her dad have a fun day baking together, carefully choosing ingredients (no spiders or snails!), dancing as they mix in eggs and sugar, getting accidentally covered with flour, and imitating Carmen Miranda with fruit on their heads and grass skirts on their waists. The two of them then decorate the house for a party as their creation bakes. The girl’s enthusiasm at spending the time baking with her dad is contagious, and it’s notable that we see a father engaged in the traditionally feminine activity of household baking.

The doorbell then rings, and another man walks in to the birthday surprise! He’s never identified—my initial reaction was that he is the girl’s other father, but a friend pointed out that he would probably not have rung the doorbell had he lived there. Having said that, it’s possible the two dads were in on the surprise (or the second dad suspected something because it was his birthday), and the second dad rang the doorbell to make sure things were ready before he entered. The daughter would still view it as a surprise, even if the dads had arranged things in advance. Despite the lack of clarity about the family, though, two-dad families (and others) may still delight in this tale. If it contains two dads,  it isn’t “about” the fact of two dads. A helpful family cat adds to the fun, and numerous friends of various skin tones show up at the end to celebrate with them.
