Before You Were You

Two dads tell the story of starting their family by surrogacy. “So, what did we need?/An egg and a seed./Counting seeds—we had plenty, but eggs? None, indeed!” they relate. They then tell of the artist who provided the egg and the teacher who carried the embryo. The final pages convey, in words and images, how many people—doctor, nurses, family, friends, as well as the dads, the egg donor, and the surrogate—all contributed to the child’s creation.

While the rhymes are sometimes awkward, families who began via surrogacy may appreciate this rare picture book about another family who did the same.
