Birdie and Me

Jack and her little brother Birdie had been living with Uncle Carl since their mom, who had lived with mental illness, died in a car accident. He indulged them with Honey Bunny Buns and too many days off from school, until truancy officers force them to relocate under their Uncle Patrick’s more responsible guidance. Patrick, however, doesn’t want to let Birdie wear sparkly clothes and nail polish, as these had caused “disruption” at their previous school. Jack tries to navigate their new circumstances, new friends, and feuding uncles while protecting Birdie from bullies (but not via Patrick’s solution of changing Birdie’s wardrobe). The relationship between Jack and Birdie is the touching heart of this book, but secondary characters are well-realized and occasionally humorous. Despite dealing with loss and bullying, this is very much a story of resilience and hope.
