Gender Heroes: 25 Amazing Transgender, Non-Binary and Genderqueer Trailblazers from Past and Present!

A bright and celebratory book profiling 25 amazing transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people from the U.S. and U.K.

Within the pages here are historical figures like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera; actors and entertainers like Laverne Cox, Elliott Page, Chella Man, and Alok Vaid-Menon; activists (accidental or intentional) like Gavin Grimm, Charlie Craggs, Freddy McConnell, Jazz Jennings, and Pidgeon Pagonis; politicians like Sarah McBride and Mauree Turner; and more. Each person gets a spread with text on one side and a brightly colored picture of them on the other. A glossary at the end offers help with a few terms, but the focus is on the people and their accomplishments, who are varied in racial/ethnic identities.

The text here is fairly simple, but there’s enough of it on each page to place this in the older elementary-school age range (though it could be used as a read-aloud for younger children). For younger children, a similar introduction to queer leaders (though across the whole LGBTQ spectrum) is Sarah Prager’s Kind Like Marsha; for middle graders, try Prager’s Rainbow Revolutionaries.
