How To Be A Big Brother

“New baby is here! Hip hip hooray! You’re a big brother…starting today!” begins this cheerful board book that offers simple, rhyming ways for young children to be helpful, caring siblings. “Help hold the bottle for baby’s snack. And gently pat sweet baby’s back,” it advises in one example. The people depicted include a range of racial and ethnic identities, as well as both coupled and single parents. A two-mom family is among them.

We never see how the baby came to be in the family, leaving room for families created in various ways.

While this story doesn’t address our desperate need for books that focus exclusively on new siblings arriving in LGBTQ-headed families (as I explain here, the few current offerings are either old, hard to get in the U.S., or involve animal analogies), it is nevertheless cheery and helpful and allows kids with two moms, at least, to see a family like theirs.
