I Am Jazz

In one of the first picture books featuring a trans child, Jazz Jennings, a transgender girl, shares the true story of her life.

This heartfelt story may be extremely valuable for transgender girls going through a similar transition at home and at school. Unfortunately, the way it frames part of her realization of her gender as stemming from her interest in princess and mermaid costumes, versus trucks, tools, or superheroes (however true that may have been for her), reinforces those types of play as gender stereotypes. For a general audience of children, therefore, this book is best used in conjunction with another book (like Pink, Blue, and You) that dismantles them.
