My Family Is Changing: A Drawing and Activity Book for Kids of Divorce

This interactive book is intended to help children better understand and cope with the changes that come with having divorced parents. In it, seven (fictional) children of various skin tones, including one with two moms and one with two dads, share their own stories of having divorced parents. Each story is followed by prompts and activities, such as “Draw a picture of something you like to do with each of your parents,” “Think about a feeling you wish your parents understood, and draw it here,” and “Do you have a friend you’d like to tell about your parents’ divorce? Draw a picture of yourself talking to them.”

The reasons for the parents’ divorces are not touched on at all; parents who divorced because one came out or transitioned are not specifically discussed. That’s not a criticism; just a guide for those who may be seeking that specific type of content. As a general aid to children processing their parents’ divorce and their own feelings around it, this is a compassionate and thoughtful guide by a practicing child and family therapist.
