An affirming though pedagogical story about a boy whose parent is transitioning to live as a transgender man. Told from the child’s perspective, the book is supportive and informative, although it is obviously depicting just one family’s experience. Some trans parents choose to keep their original parental titles after transition, for example, as here; others will switch. And not all trans people will undergo medical or surgical transition—although this is described simply but accurately by saying that the doctors “helped him feel better in his body” and so that “his insides match his outsides much more.” Nevertheless, children with trans parents (and their peers!) may gain insight and affirmation from this supportive book that shows the child helping their parent through transition (e.g., by bringing snacks while he is recovering, or standing up to those who misgender him), but also benefitting from their parent’s happiness.
A short glossary at the end further explains some of the concepts in the book, and one page asks readers to reflect on their own gender.
The family is White; secondary characters reflect a variety of skin tones and identities.
