My Uncle’s Wedding

A boy named Andy learns what a wedding is all about as he helps his uncle and the uncle’s boyfriend prepare for theirs. The story is cute and lighthearted, but lacks much dramatic tension, as much is devoted to the boy learning what “getting married” means and narrating the various activities related to planning the wedding (such as choosing food, flowers, cake, and suit), and the various activities at the wedding itself (being a ringbearer, opening presents, and dancing). At the end, he says he is glad his uncle got married because he (the uncle) really loves his spouse, and because he (Andy) now has two uncles. Andy’s happiness over his uncle’s marriage was never in question, however, making the narrative feel rather flat, despite the humor throughout. Sarah Brannen’s Uncle Bobby’s Wedding, which shows the young protagonist wondering how her relationship with her uncle will change after he marries his boyfriend, and if he’ll still have time for her, feels like a more compelling story.
