Old MacDonald Had a Baby

Old MacDonald is a new dad, and experiences humorous challenges caring for his baby, all set to the tune of the classic song. We see him feeding the child (“And for that baby he made some food”), taking the child to the park, changing a diaper, reading a bedtime story, and more, as a bevy of anthropomorphic animals help along the way. Only at the end, when we see a second dad come home and put his arm around the sleeping pair, do we realize this is a two-dad family. The very first page, in which Old MacDonald stands in the doorway holding the baby and waving to a man outside, was, we now realize, meant to show him saying goodbye to his husband as he went off (presumably to work) for the day. That wasn’t clear until the last page, however, when we understand their relationship. (This could have been fixed by initially showing the entire family having breakfast together, or the working dad kissing the others goodbye.) Despite this, families with one working spouse may (at least after a first read-through) appreciate this light-hearted portrayal of a day in the life of a stay-at-home parent.
