Pebble and Wren

In this early middle grade graphic novel, based on author/illustrator Chris Hallbeck’s webcomic, monster Pebble needs to spend time in the human world to help unlock their monster skills. Human child Wren and her two dads take Pebble in. Wren tries to show Pebble how the human world works, offering silly (but not entirely inaccurate) descriptions of everything from refrigeration to gravity to human bodies. Pebble likes to learn, but also likes to eat, including things like rocks, books, and candy wrappers, which Pebble does her best to dissuade him from.

Each chapter has its own subplot, but a larger arc shows an evolving friendship between Wren and Pebble as they continue to seek Pebble’s special skill. Can they find it before Pebble must return to the monster forest? And might Pebble be closer to it than they think?

A lighthearted tale of friendship across difference, with sweetness and charm.

Wren is White, as is one dad; the other has brown skin.
