Saturday: Up and Down and All Around (The Jessie Books)

The sixth book of a series about the everyday adventures of a young girl named Jessie who has two moms. This Saturday, Jessie is testing for her brown belt in taekwondo. She’s a little nervous, but with the support of her moms, her master, and the family and friends there to cheer her on, she succeeds, and everyone happily goes out to eat afterwards.

Young readers will likely appreciate Jessie’s kids’-eye observations about her world. The story is pure dialog, which helps immerse readers in Jessie’s world, although the lack of dialog tags make it occasionally hard to tell who is speaking. This is an earnest and cheerful story in which the fact that Jessie has two moms is purely incidental to the tale. Jessie, her moms, and grandparents are White; friends and neighbors have a variety of skin tones.
