The Accursed Vampire #2: The Curse at Witch Camp

This second graphic novel about a nonbinary vampire kid named Dragoslava (“Drago”) is another delight. In this one, Dragoslava, who has a chalk-white face, bald head, and black cape, is off to camp with their two vampire friends, Quintus, a Black boy and son of a vampire queen, and Eztli, an overall-clad girl with brown skin and bird feet. (“Eztli” means “blood” in Aztec-Nahuatl.) Drago is skeptical about going to camp with living children, unsure of their own ability to make friends.

Of course, more is going on at the camp than meets the eye, as Drago learns when they find an abandoned minigolf course housing a sinister supernatural entity who wants to take over the camp. And the witch whose spellbook he failed to return still bears a grudge. Will Drogo leave the camp and its dangers, or return to help their friends?

Author Madeline McGrane again gives us an offbeat world of magic, vampires, and modern conveniences, and has clearly thought through many small, amusing details of vampiric lives. (One character observes of Drago, “They are odd and impolite, but they have a good heart lying dead and still in their chest.”)

Lots of fun.
