The Gay Rights Movement

This brief middle-grade history covers pre-Stonewall movements of the 20th century; Stonewall itself; growing activism in the 1970s and the connection to related movements, such as feminism; the AIDS crisis; the fight for gay and lesbian people to serve openly in the military; the fight for marriage equality (up through Massachusetts’ enactment of it); the growing movement for transgender equality; backlash (such as the Pulse nightclub shooting), and ongoing inequities and discrimination. It’s a serviceable, if somewhat dry treatment that hits highlights and supplements them with sidebars highlighting notable people.

The title is unfortunate, in that it does not encompass the whole LGBTQ community, although the content does a somewhat better job. A timeline and glossary are helpful; the additional books and websites under “Further Information” feel somewhat dated now.
