The Witch Boy (The Witch Boy Trilogy #1)

Thirteen-year-old Aster would rather do witchery than wait for his shapeshifting powers to manifest, although in his family, only girls are raised to be witches, while boys are shapeshifters. When he is caught listening to the girls’ witchery lessons, his mother reveals a family secret: his great-uncle tried witchery, unleashed a disaster, and was exiled.

This doesn’t dissuade Aster, however, who continues practicing. Charlie, a young non-magical friend whom he meets in the woods, supports his efforts.

When a mysterious creature seizes a boy in his village, Aster knows he can help with witchery. Can he find the courage to show off his forbidden skills?

Charming illustrations and a sweet message about being oneself, regardless of gender norms, make this a recommended read.

Aster is biracial (Black/White) and Charlie is Black; other characters are of various skin tones.
