Too Cold Marigold

A young girl named Marigold wakes up one morning reluctant to get out of bed because “It’s too cold.” Her Mommy and Mama offer help and suggestions—but then Marigold is “too warm!” Will she ever find the right layering?

This slice-of-life book happily adds to the growing number of picture books where the parents’ LGBTQ identities are incidental to the tale.

Narratively, a few small things might be improved—for example, it would have been better to know earlier that Sammy is Marigold’s brother, and that he is the one sitting next to her at the breakfast table. Nevertheless, the book feels nicely paced, with short, snappy sentences that keep the story moving. It’s a cheery tale of daily life that should resonate with many families (especially those of us in colder climes).

Marigold and Mama are White; Sammy and Mommy have brown skin and dark brown hair.
