Wednesday a Walk in the Park (The Jessie Books)

The third book of a series about the everyday adventures of a young girl named Jessie who has two moms. This volume shows Jessie’s grandparents coming to stay with her while Mommy runs off in a suit (presumably to work, though this is never stated). Grandpa takes Jessie to the park and imparts wisdom about why the leaves turn colors and about sharing and helping people, prompted by encounters with children they meet. They go back home and Jessie tells Grandma all the things she learned. Jessie’s Mom is never mentioned in this volume; readers who haven’t read the other books in the series may think Mommy is a single parent.

Young readers will likely appreciate Jessie’s kids’-eye observations about her world. The story is pure dialog, which helps immerse readers in Jessie’s world, although the lack of dialog tags make it occasionally hard to tell who is speaking. Still, this is an earnest and cheerful story in which the fact that Jessie has two moms is purely incidental to the tale. Jessie, her moms, and grandparents are White. One girl they encounter at the park is White; another has light brown skin, as do a boy and his mother whom Grandpa helps.
